Organizing Closets in Florida Homes: A Realistic Guide

Florida closets deal with humidity and mildew. Here's how to organize and protect your belongings.

Florida closets have a unique challenge that most organizing guides ignore: humidity. Your closet might be perfectly organized, but if moisture isn't controlled, you'll end up with mildewed clothes, musty shoes, and mold on the walls. Here's how to organize and protect your belongings.

Humidity Control First

Before organizing, address the moisture:

  • Place moisture absorbers (DampRid) in every closet
  • Keep closet doors slightly open or use louvered doors for air circulation
  • Never store damp items — always ensure clothes are fully dry before hanging
  • Use a small dehumidifier in large walk-in closets
  • Check closet walls periodically for mold, especially exterior walls

Purge and Organize

You cannot organize your way out of having too much stuff. Remove everything and sort into three piles: keep, donate, trash. If you haven't worn something in 12 months, it goes. Be ruthless — especially with items that have already developed mildew stains.

Maximize Vertical Space

Most closet rods are set at one height, wasting the space above and below:

  • Add a second hanging rod below the first for shorter items (shirts, skirts)
  • Use shelf dividers on the top shelf to keep stacks from toppling
  • Over-door hooks for bags, scarves, and accessories
  • Cedar blocks or sachets to deter moths and absorb moisture
  • Stackable bins on the floor for folded items — use ventilated bins in Florida

Keep It Clean

A clean, organized closet is easier to maintain. Vacuum the closet floor monthly and wipe down shelves. Cedar blocks keep things fresh and deter moths. An organized closet also means less clutter in the rest of your home, which makes regular cleaning faster and your space feel bigger.
